Government launches AI Biosecurity Lab with up to £300mn backing
The Cabinet Office has announced the AI Biosecurity Lab, backed by up to £300mn from government and AI firms, to strengthen UK resilience to biological threats.
New biosecurity organisation announced
The Cabinet Office has announced the creation of the AI Biosecurity Lab (AIBL), which it describes as the world's first dedicated AI biosecurity organisation. The lab forms part of a wider National AI Biosecurity Initiative and is intended to strengthen UK resilience to biological threats using artificial intelligence.
Funding
According to the Cabinet Office, AIBL is backed by £100 million in government funding, alongside up to £200 million in company commitments from OpenAI and Anthropic. OpenAI will provide £100 million in compute and model credits, along with trusted access to its most capable relevant models through its Rosalind Biodefense programme. Anthropic will provide up to £100 million in model credits, trusted model access and dedicated technical support. The government says it intends for AIBL to be supported by both public and philanthropic funding over time.
Mission and initial focus
The Cabinet Office states that AIBL's mission is to strengthen biosecurity by harnessing frontier AI, bringing together AI and biological science expertise to develop practical technical capabilities. Initial delivery will focus on two areas: enhancing early detection of emerging biological threats, and accelerating the development of vaccines, treatments and other medical countermeasures.
Partnerships
The Cabinet Office says partnerships are central to AIBL's approach. Beyond its government funders, AIBL will also partner with Google DeepMind and UK AI life sciences company Basecamp Research on research collaborations and AI-for-science tools. Basecamp Research will provide access to its AI-biology models and technical expertise, while Google DeepMind scientists and biosecurity experts will collaborate with AIBL and look to provide trusted access to its Gemini and specialised science models.
The lab is also designed to work closely with government bodies. The Cabinet Office states that AIBL is being launched alongside the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) and the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), as well as the life sciences sector. It will additionally work with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to prepare for health emergencies and inform the regulation of AI-designed medicines.
Structure
The Cabinet Office says AIBL will operate as an independent, non-profit organisation, similar in structure to the AI Security Institute, with sufficient autonomy to operate at the pace of a frontier AI-bio company. It will be supported by a scientific advisory committee drawing on expertise from academia, industry and the third sector, with further details on that committee to be set out in due course.
Announced by the Cabinet Office, GOV.UK, 24 October 2026.
